Psycho Andy Fuzz - Singing Fuzz Insanity in a Pedal
This fuzz was inspired by some of the out of control fuzz tones on the Jesus and Mary Chain album Psycho Candy. In particular, the tracks Never Understand and You Trip Me Up served as inspiration. Definitely not a fuzz sound that's for everyone, but I actually like it, given the right circumstances. That's one of my favorite albums, so after some research I found out that the Shin Ei fuzz boxes were responsible for a lot of the awesome fuzz sounds on that album. For the Psycho Andy, I started with a schematic I found for the original Shin Ei Fuzz Companion, then I mapped it out on the breadboard and started playing, adding parts to the circuit, changing the routing in a few places, changing it back, so on and so forth until I came to the final version that I stuck in these pedals. For this run, I use NOS SC536 transistors for the gain sections to produce that great, horn-like fuzz tone. Simple controls...Volume for level, Scoop for the variable mid scoop (the original was just scooped mids), and Fuzz, which controls the nature of the drive more than the amount of drive.
